Help create a safe place for kids...at the Ukiah Rec Center!

Letter from Marvin Trotter, Board President

| Center Features | Executive Summary | Program Description |

Children need three positive elements in their lives to reach their fullest potential:

  • a stimulating environment
  • a safe place to play and just be kids
  • a caring community which fosters a sense of self worth.

Parents, teachers, and other leaders in the community, like you, need to work together to achieve these goals. The Ukiah Valley Cultural and Recreational Center represents such a collaborative effort.

The Ukiah Valley Cultural and Recreational Center will encompass 20,000 sq. feet of space for community activities. The facility will include:

  • a hardwood gymnasium
  • youth center with rooms for art, music, computers, tutoring and games
  • a professional kitchen
  • spacious meeting rooms and office space for service providers.

It is anticipated that construction costs will be $5 million. Approximately $1 million will be raised locally. Public funds, private foundations and corporate donors will provide the remainder.

The County of Mendocino has allocated $1 million from Tobacco Settlement funds. The City of Ukiah has provided $1 million through a Community Development Block Grant. Ukiah Unified School District has provided the land and $800,000 from the State Allocation Board for the development of joint-use facilities.

In 2003, a new elementary school, the Grace Hudson Elementary School, will be built adjacent to the Ukiah Valley Cultural and Recreational Center. Located in the southern end of Ukiah, these two projects will create a renaissance of community activity. Ukiah Unified School District will have access to the gymnasium and the UVCRC will be allowed to use the school’s stage for various performances, rehearsals and exhibits. On any given day the Center will be teeming with children playing and community members of all ages participating in creative and educational activities.

The goal of the Ukiah Valley Cultural and Recreational Center is to positively impact the lives of thousands of children and families in our community.

Please join us and help fulfill our vision for a better Ukiah!
